Total Productive Maintenance (TPM)

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) was first introduced in Japan in the 1950's as part of the Total Quality Management (TQM) movement.  Many of the tools and techniques that it introduced have now become part of the mainstream of Maintenance Improvement techniques.

The TPM tools that we have found to be of most useful application include:

• 5S - Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke as a means of introducing orderliness into workplaces, and identifying and eliminating waste


• The Visual Workplace - as a means of making it obvious when planned activities have, or have not been completed, and providing immediate feedback to those who can influence organisational outcomes


• Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) as a measure of overall asset performance


• Autonomous Maintenance - as a means of ensuring that plant operators take greater ownership of equipment condition and performance
